How to edit a first draft without losing its voice
Editing works best in passes. Fix the story’s direction first, then the scene rhythm, then sentences and polish.
A clear sequence
- Read once for the promise and the ending.
- Mark scenes that repeat information or do not change the situation.
- Tighten transitions and clarify who wants what.
- Only then adjust line rhythm, word choice, and details.
- Read the final pass aloud to catch friction.
Keeping the passes separate protects the larger shape while you improve the language.
